What Remains Today?
The Maya pyramids still remain on earth till present day. Archaeologists have found many different pyramids of the Maya today that were religious structures and could be used as tombs in Egypt. One important pyramid that remains today is the pyramid in the Maya city of Tikal. This pyramid is known as Temple I. This pyramid is also the tomb of Ha Sawa Chaan K'awil, a Tikal ruler.
What was there when it was used by the Mayas?
When it was used by the Maya civilization, it was a massive pyramid with much detail put into it. There used to be a city called Tikal there and the pyramid was considered a temple. Not only that, but there was also a tomb for the Tikal ruler himself. There were also pyramids that were as tall as 200 feet tall. The Tikal pyramids were the tallest structures in the Americas until 1903, which is the date that the Flatiron Building was built in New Your City.
What made it special?
There were a few reasons the Temple I was a special thing in the city of Tikal. One of those reasons as mentioned earlier was that it was used as a religious service and a tomb. The leaders of Tikal were buried there when they had passed away. Not only that, but the pyramids themselves were almost religious monuments and could be seen as a symbol of the Maya civilization.

The temple is still visited by archaeologists. The temple was discovered in 1848 and in 1877 where various pieces were looted from the major temples at Tikal, which included pieces of the temple itself. The temple is visited usually by busload today but it doesn't feel overrun or crowded like many other modern sites do. The temple is a fascinating place to visit, mainly because of its remoteness and its exotic jungle setting. There are also many guided tours for the trip as well as speakers on the bus themselves. There are also some hotels nearby like Jaguar Inn, which is a clean hotel with simple rooms Jungle Lodge, nice hotel with semi luxurious room and one pool.
